Women’s Finalists for M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Announced

Carson, Calif. - An Olympic gold-medalist, the 2002 College Cup M.V.P., and the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Year comprise the three finalists for the women’s Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy, the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer. The finalists were determined in voting of Division I women’s soccer coaches who are members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

North Carolina’s Heather O’Reilly is joined by Portland’s Christine Sinclair and Penn State’s Tiffany Weimer as the three finalists for the award. The trio will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 7, for a news conference where the winner of the award will be revealed. A banquet at the Club that evening will feature the formal presentation of the prestigious crystal soccer ball trophy to the winner.

O’Reilly, a sophomore forward from East Brunswick, N.J., led the Tar Heels with 13 goals and 37 points. She helped lead UNC to an undefeated regular season. O’Reilly was the youngest member of the gold-medal winning 2004 U.S. Women’s Olympic team.

Sinclair, a junior forward from Burnaby, B.C., led the Pilots with 22 goals and 55 points. She was the West Coast Conference Player of the Week three times this season. Sinclair has been a member of the Canadian National Team since 2000. She was the 2002 College Cup Offensive M.V.P., scoring the overtime goal that gave Portland their first national title.

Weimer, a junior forward from North Haven, Conn., led Penn State with 26 goals and 64 points. She led the Nittany Lions to their seventh consecutive Big Ten regular season championship. Weimer earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors six times this season and was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.

An exhibition featuring the current and the past recipients of the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy is on display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, N.Y.
